When I began my own musical journey, I studied both the classical method in school on saxophone while simultaneously self-teaching myself guitar and also singing in the church choir. My education continued through marching band, jazz band, and on to a college degree in Music Theory & Composition. Now, I appreciate and encourage combining both the traditional classical method and a more modern practical approach to gain a totally comprehensive musical education that trains your fingers, ears, and brain equally. I call this concept "Music Intelligence" and it is what will help you become the musician you've always dreamed of being.
I would love the opportunity to be your music teacher! ~BJ Callahan
“As a 60 year old retiree, it was time to follow through on my dream to play the guitar. I found BJ through a friend’s recommendation for an instructor that was skilled at teaching both young and old students. It was obvious listening to BJ play that he is an accomplished musician. After about a year of instruction I have confirmed he is also an accomplished teacher. He has patiently and comprehensively taken a slow learning “old timer” to a level of acoustic guitar playing that is beyond what I anticipated. Thank you BJ for helping me reach one of my “bucket list” goals!”
My son, Hank, has been taking music lessons from BJ at FNKY Music Studios once a week for almost 5 years, starting when he was just 6 years old! BJ always shows great patience with Hank. He encourages independence and creativity while being mindful of Hank’s interests when teaching new songs. I cannot think of a single time Hank didn’t enjoy going. Communication has always been on point. BJ goes above and beyond to find Hank opportunities to play music, to show Hank cool projects he is working on, to encourage Hank to be creative, and so much more. Hank has become quite the well rounded and confident musician. He is learning from the best!
Twice a year the studio gives students an opportunity to showcase the music students are learning. It is always laid back with a focus on community and enjoying music. Never any pressure, just fun!
I look forward to watching Hank continue to succeed with BJ’s guidance.
